Which wins — and at what.

Short answer

For getting found, topical authority wins — search engines rank pages on relevance, coverage, and authority, not on how the homepage looks. A gorgeous 10-page site competes for nothing. Custom design is table stakes (a dated or broken site loses trust and conversions) but it isn’t a ranking lever. You don’t pick one — you want a site that’s clearly designed and genuinely deep.

Why a beautiful site, on its own, ranks for nothing

Search engines don’t see your typography. They see pages, the words on them, how those pages link to each other, and the signals pointing in from the rest of the web. A 10-page site — however well-art-directed — has ten pages’ worth of relevance to offer, against competitors who’ve built a hundred pages each mapped to a real query. The redesign didn’t change the math. This is the part that surprises owners who’ve just spent five figures on a “new website” and watched their rankings sit exactly where they were: the agency rebuilt the brochure, prettier, but it’s still a brochure. Depth is the ranking lever — coverage of the topic’s subtopics and questions, structured so search engines can read it as authority. That’s what “more pages that each earn their place” means, and it’s why this site exists to argue it.

Where design genuinely matters

Two places, and they’re not small. Conversion: once topical authority earns you the traffic, design is what turns a visitor into a call or a form fill — clarity, hierarchy, trust signals, friction removed from the path to contact. A deep site that converts at 1% is leaving most of its earned traffic on the floor; that’s a design problem, and a real one. Credibility: a dated, slow, or visibly broken site reads as a dated, slow, or careless business — buyers do judge the book by its cover, especially for higher-consideration services. So design isn’t decoration. It’s the thing standing between “found you” and “hired you”. It just isn’t the thing that gets you found.

Why it’s both, not either

The honest answer is that you want a site that’s clearly designed and deep — and that there’s no real tension between the two, because they do different jobs. The agency’s own builds do both: the 14-day build includes the design work — a custom theme, the brand system, Lighthouse 95+, WCAG 2.1 AA — and then the cluster does the ranking. You’re not choosing between a pretty site and a findable one; you’re getting a designed site that also covers its topic, which is what an authority site is. If design is genuinely the only thing that’s behind — the structure’s fine, the site just looks like 2014 — then a focused web design pass is the right scope, and if you’re not sure which it is, a SEO audit will tell you.

What to watch for: an agency selling you only a “beautiful redesign” with no topical depth is selling you the part that doesn’t move organic. The new look might help conversion and credibility — worth having — but if the pitch is “this redesign will grow your traffic” and there’s no map, no cluster, no plan for the pages you don’t have, that pitch is wrong about how ranking works. Ask them what pages the topic map says you’re missing. If they don’t have an answer, you’ve found the gap.

If this was useful: read topical maps next in this cluster — and for the bigger picture, the same depth applied as a programmatic build.
