The answer.

Short answer

The map pack is the box of (usually) three local business listings, with a small map, that Google shows near the top of the results for searches with local intent — “plumber near me”, “estate planning attorney Brandon”, “managed IT St. Petersburg”. It’s also called the 3-pack or the local pack. It sits above the regular organic links, it’s where most “near me” clicks land, and it runs on relevance, distance and prominence rather than ordinary ranking signals.

Where it sits and why that matters

Run a local-intent search on a phone and watch what’s above the fold: often it’s the map and three listings, each with a star rating, a category, hours, a call button and a directions link — and then, below all of that, the first blue organic result. For a service business the order is the whole story. The pack occupies the screen real estate a searcher sees first and acts on fastest, and on mobile — where most local-service searches happen, someone in their car or on a job site — that’s nearly the entire visible page. Being the best organic result for “AC repair Tampa” and being absent from the pack means a stranger with a broken AC sees three competitors before they ever scroll to you.

It’s not a vanity slot. The pack listings carry the actions a ready buyer wants — tap to call, tap for directions, see the reviews — so the click that lands there is closer to a customer than a click on a regular result. That’s why “get into the pack” is the goal underneath most local-SEO work, and why the rest of this cluster is organised around it.

How it differs from the organic results

  • It’s tied to a Google Business Profile, not just a website. Organic results rank web pages. The pack ranks profiles — claimed, verified, categorised listings — with the website behind them as supporting evidence. No profile, no pack. The field-by-field version is on Google Business Profile: the settings that move the pack.
  • It’s personalised to where the searcher is. Two people searching the same words from different parts of town can see different packs, because distance to the searcher is a real factor. That’s why a competitor with worse reviews can outrank you for someone standing near their door — covered here — and why you check your own pack from inside your service area, not from a hotel three cities over.
  • It’s decided on relevance, distance and prominence. Google names those three openly. Relevance — does the profile and its website match the search. Distance — how close the business is to the searcher. Prominence — how well-known and well-regarded the business is, which includes reviews, citations and the site’s own authority. You can move relevance and prominence; distance you can’t. The full breakdown of how to act on that is on how do I rank in the map pack.
A reasonable check

Open Google Maps on your phone, search “[what you do] near me” from your shop, then again from across town. The pack reshuffles. That reshuffle is distance doing its job — and it’s the clearest demonstration of why the pack isn’t a single fixed leaderboard you either “rank #1 in” or don’t.

So how do you get in it

The same way you’d expect from the three factors: a complete, correctly-categorised profile; a real website behind it that’s genuinely relevant to the search; a steady flow of reviews; consistent citations. Fix the profile first, the site second, keep the reviews trickling. The ordered version of that — and the worked HVAC example behind it — is on how do I rank in the map pack, and the whole system end to end is on the local SEO hub. If you’d rather know which piece is your gap before you touch any of it, the SEO audit reads exactly that — or send your URL for a free 5-minute version first.

The pack isn’t a chart you climb. It’s a question Google answers fresh for every searcher: who’s relevant, close, and credible right here? Be the answer where it counts.
