AI content & SEO · Quick answer
Knowledge guideAI content vs. human-written content — which ranks better?
It feels like a head-to-head. It isn’t. Google doesn’t rank “AI” against “human” — it ranks helpful against unhelpful. Here’s why the question is the wrong axis, and what actually decides it.
The answer.
Wrong axis. What ranks is helpful content that matches what the searcher wanted — period. “AI or human?” isn’t a ranking factor; Google has said how content is produced isn’t the thing it scores. In practice the work that wins is AI-accelerated and human-directed: pure-AI tends to be generic, pure-manual tends to be too slow to ever get the coverage. The tool isn’t the differentiator. The judgment is.
Why “AI vs. human” is the wrong question
Pose it as a fight and you’ve already lost the thread. Google’s published position has consistently been that it rewards quality content however it’s made, and acts against content produced primarily to game rankings — by humans, AI, or a mix. There’s no points bonus for “a person typed this” and no penalty for “a tool drafted it.” The variable it actually weighs is whether the page is the genuinely useful answer to the search: right intent, real substance, clear structure, someone credible behind it. We go through the actual guidance on what Google actually says about AI content, and the same point shows up from a different angle on is AI content bad for SEO — lazy content is bad for SEO whoever produced it; good content is just content.
So the comparison that matters isn’t AI versus human. It’s good versus lazy — and both species come in both flavours.
What each one is actually bad at
- Pure-AI, nobody steering: generic. A draft with no angle, no first-hand specifics, claims nobody checked, the same shape as ten thousand other pages on the topic. It reads like a competent summary of the internet’s average take — which is exactly what it is, and exactly what doesn’t rank, because it’s not the best answer to anything. The structural gap is Experience: the AI hasn’t done the job. We unpack that on E-E-A-T when AI helped write it.
- Pure-manual, no acceleration: slow, and therefore thin on coverage. One writer hand-crafting every page rarely gets to the full long tail — the forty answer pages, the neighbourhood pages, the questions buyers actually type. The pages that exist might be excellent; the ones that should exist never get written, so the site loses on breadth to a competitor who covered the ground. Topical depth is the lever that moves rankings, and depth at the necessary scale is hard to reach by hand.
- What wins: AI doing the drafting at speed, a senior person setting the angle, verifying every claim, supplying the first-hand detail, wiring the internal links, killing the pages that have nothing to say, and standing behind the result — on a coherent topical map that makes the volume read as thoroughness, not a dump. That’s not AI versus human. It’s AI under human direction, which is the only version of this that’s been beating both extremes.
If your topic genuinely needs first-hand testing, measurement, or lived experience the AI can’t have had — and the human directing it doesn’t supply it — the page will be hollow no matter how clean the prose. AI-accelerated is not AI-only. The human layer isn’t a quality-assurance afterthought; it’s where the rankable substance comes from. “How much AI is acceptable” follows the same rule — there’s no percentage, there’s a test.
What this looks like in the field
Bayshore HVAC went from 12 pages to 184 — service × neighbourhood × intent — in a 14-day build, and organic was up 312% in 90 days with ranked keywords going 3 → 67 in 60. A solo law practice replaced its referral-marketplace dependency with 29 programmatic pages and had four in the top ten inside 60 days. Those didn’t win because “AI” or because “human.” They won because the pages were the genuinely useful answer to real searches, produced fast enough to actually cover the topic, with senior judgment on every one. That’s the model the authority-site build runs on — and programmatic SEO is the version for data that fits a template cleanly. The mechanics — who owns the angle, who fact-checks, where the line is between specific and padded — are the human-edit workflow. Nobody ever ranked because a human wrote it. They ranked because it was the best answer — and the best answer almost always needed both the speed of the tool and the judgment of the person.
